Forty seconds is how much of a YouTube video Google's AI Overviews typically cites when a query points to a specific timestamp inside the clip, a pattern BrightEdge found in half of all YouTube citations inside Google AIO. OpenAI's ChatGPT selects the entire video when it cites YouTube and places that citation closer to the point where a consumer is ready to buy, according to BrightEdge CEO Jim Yu. Ecommerce videos led citation volume at 32.3%, followed by finance at 27.5%, restaurants at 25.8%, education at 24.3%, B2B at 23.2% and insurance at 22.4%. Short-form videos are cited in AI Overviews 17.5% of the time. BrightEdge fielded the data from May 17 through August 2, 2026, tracking citation type and purchase-intent stage separately for Google AIO and ChatGPT.

A video chaptered to win extra citations inside Google AI Overviews can lose ground with ChatGPT, which weighs the entire asset before deciding to cite it, so the two engines reward different production choices from the same footage. Yu recommends treating a YouTube library as a structured database built once, with accurate chapters and manually uploaded transcripts serving every AI engine. Manually uploaded transcripts and chapter markers decide whether a clip earns a citation, since neither engine watches the footage itself. A citation count only confirms a video was cited. It hides whether the whole asset earned that mention or one moment inside it, a gap BrightEdge says marketers cannot yet track.
