Nine persistent challenges in sports audience measurement, from cross-platform fragmentation and unauthorised streaming to sponsorship valuation and outcome measurement, are laid out in a new paper from the Coalition for Innovative Media Measurement (CIMM), titled 'Keeping the Score: Industry Perspectives on Innovations in Sports Media Measurement.' The paper argues that incomplete cross-platform measurement risks a 'fragmentation discount' that pushes advertising pricing down, while low confidence in current metrics creates a 'measurement risk premium' that skews the valuation of sports rights and long-term revenue streams. Jon Watts, CIMM's Managing Director, said measurement "increasingly determines how sports rights are valued, how advertising is priced, how platforms compete." The paper points to emerging solutions such as hybrid panel-plus-big-data architectures, identity-enabled deduplication and advanced sponsorship analytics, and it considers the rise of AI and synthetic currencies that blend observed viewer behaviour with modeled estimates, raising questions about transparency, auditing standards and marketplace confidence.

Ad pricing and rights valuations move directly on how much confidence buyers and sellers have in the numbers behind them. A fragmentation discount lowers what sellers can charge for inventory that spans broadcast, streaming and social, while a measurement risk premium raises the cost of uncertainty embedded in multi-year rights deals. CIMM's paper points to hybrid panel-plus-big-data approaches, identity-enabled deduplication and sponsorship analytics as ways to close that gap, and it flags that AI and synthetic currencies blending observed behaviour with modeled estimates will need clear standards for transparency and auditing before the market treats them as trustworthy currency.
